Best Time to Get Married in Greece in 2026: A Month-by-Month Honest Guide

The best months to get married in Greece are May and October. Both deliver comfortable temperatures, direct flights from most major European cities, and venue prices 20–30% below peak season. May gives you spring wildflowers; October gives you warm sea temperatures and quieter venues. Either saves €3,000–€4,800 versus peak summer.

Greek wedding season at a glance: month-by-month

Month Direct Flights Cost vs Peak Christina’s verdict
April Limited; via Athens −25 to −30% Best value, but flight logistics need work
May Yes, from mid-May −20 to −30% My top pick
June Yes Within 10% of peak Last chance to negotiate
July Yes Peak Peak heat, prices, crowds
August Yes Peak Aug 1–15 blocked for Orthodox weddings
September Yes At or near peak Peak prices, ease winding down
October Yes −20 to −30% Best-kept secret; warm sea, low prices
November to March Reduced flights Lowest, limited venues Mainland only; small intimate weddings

About this data: cost ranges based on Christina’s 2026 conversations with venues across Crete, Santorini, Corfu, and Mykonos. When couples start planning a destination wedding in Greece, timing is often an afterthought. Pick a month that sounds nice, check the calendar. But the month you choose affects your venue budget, your guests’ flight costs, how far in advance you need to lock in your photographer, and whether you can even get a direct flight to the island you want.

Greece’s wedding season is longer than most couples expect, running from mid-April through to mid-October. That’s six months of genuinely workable options, each with real trade-offs.

I married in May, on the island of Crete, and I’d make that choice again. But May isn’t right for everyone. This is a breakdown of what each month actually costs and what it means for your planning, so you can make the decision with real information.

So, what is the best month to get married in Greece?

Spring wedding season in Greece

If you want a direct answer: May or October. Both sit in shoulder season, which means comfortable temperatures, lower venue prices, and less competition for dates. May gives you spring light and wildflowers; October gives you warm sea temperatures and the tones of early autumn. Either month delivers the same Greek island experience as peak summer, for significantly less money and with a more relaxed atmosphere. If you have flexibility in your dates, these are the months I’d point you toward first.

Find your best month: a quick decision aid

If saving money matters most → choose May or October. Both run 20–30% below peak with comfortable temperatures. October books out fastest of the shoulder months, so don’t assume it’s easy to lock in.

If you have guests with school-age children → choose July, August, or late October (aligned with European/US summer holidays or half-term break). Cost is higher in July/August but attendance rate will be too.

If you want warm sea swimming for guests → choose June through early October. Sea temperature is best from late June onwards; October still holds warmth from summer.

If photography matters most → choose May or October. Spring light + wildflowers in May, autumn warm light in October. July midday sun is harsh and flat.

If you want maximum vendor and venue choice → choose June. Peak season is open but you retain some negotiating leverage with venues.

If you’re planning a small intimate wedding (under 20 guests) → consider November through March on the mainland, or a coastal taverna setting. Lowest costs, complete privacy, off the standard wedding calendar.

Spring weddings in Greece (April and May)

Find your perfect wedding season in greece

Spring is the season I’d recommend for most couples who aren’t locked into summer school holiday dates. The weather is warm without being punishing, the islands are quieter, and the landscapes are at their greenest and most colourful. When we married in Crete in May, the highways were lined with bright fuchsia and white flowers, and bougainvillea was in full bloom across the villages.

April

April is early in the season and offers the most flexibility, but also the most uncertainty. Weather is mild across the islands, averaging 17-20C, and rainfall is low but more likely than in May. The crowds are minimal, which works in your favour for venue access and vendor attention.

Cost vs peak season: April venues typically run 25-30% below peak season pricing. On a Crete venue priced at 7,000 EUR in July, you’re looking at closer to 5,000 EUR in April.

Venue availability and lead time: Most popular venues expect bookings 10-12 months in advance for April dates. There’s more room to negotiate on minimum spends than you’d find in peak season.

Direct flights: This is the main April complication. Direct charter flights to smaller island airports (Chania, Corfu, Zakynthos) typically haven’t started by early April. Most guests will need connecting routes via Athens. Check availability for your specific island before committing to an April date.

Planning implication: April gives you more venue options than May, but you’ll need to do more work to get guests there smoothly. Factor in the extra transfer time and cost when planning your guest logistics.

May

May is my recommendation for couples who want shoulder season value with a more settled season. By mid-May, direct charter flights are running to most major island airports, temperatures are consistently warm (averaging 20-24C), and venues are operating at full capacity without peak season pricing pressure.

Cost vs peak season: May runs approximately 20-30% below peak season pricing for most venues. A venue that charges 8,000 EUR in July will often sit at 5,500-6,000 EUR in May.

Venue availability and lead time: For sought-after May dates, most venues expect bookings 10-14 months in advance. If you’re targeting a specific Saturday in late May, don’t assume you have time to decide slowly.

Direct flights: The first direct charter flight to Chania (western Crete) in our wedding year operated on May 12th. Most island airports are running direct routes from the UK, Germany, and other major European cities by mid-May. For US and Australian guests connecting through Athens, year-round connections make May straightforward.

Planning implication: If you’re booking a May wedding, your photographer should ideally be confirmed by the previous August at the latest. The best photographers in Crete and the Cyclades fill their May calendars quickly because demand is concentrated into a short season.

Summer weddings in Greece (June, July and August)

Santorini wedding hotel

Summer is the most popular season for Greek weddings, and also the most expensive. The trade-off is straightforward: maximum flight availability, the widest vendor choice, and sea temperatures that make extended stays genuinely enjoyable for guests. The cost, in every sense, is higher.

June

June sits in an interesting position. It’s technically peak season, but early June still has some of the flexibility you’d associate with shoulder season, particularly for weekday dates. By late June, the season is fully open and pricing reflects it.

Cost vs peak season: Early June venues are typically within 10% of July rates for the same property. The saving compared to May is narrow. What you gain is a longer daylight window and more consistent heat than spring.

Venue availability and lead time: Popular venues expect 12-18 months notice for June Saturday dates. For a June wedding at one of the better-known Crete or Santorini properties, 14-16 months is a realistic lead time.

Direct flights: The full charter season is running by June. Direct flights from the UK, Europe, and major US hub cities are widely available to most island airports.

Planning implication: June is the last point in the calendar where some venues will still negotiate on minimum spends and package additions. Once July arrives, the leverage shifts entirely to the venue. If you want peak-season availability with a small amount of negotiating room, June is your window.

July and August

This is peak season, and pricing reflects it across every category. July and August are the months most couples picture when they imagine a Greek wedding, and demand for dates is at its highest.

Cost vs peak season: Expect to pay 3,000-4,800 EUR more for an equivalent venue in July or August compared to a September or October booking. On a total wedding budget of 25,000-35,000 EUR, that’s a significant difference. What venues actually charge, broken down by region and island, is covered in full in the venue cost guide.

Venue availability and lead time: For popular Crete estates and Santorini caldera venues, 12-18 months advance booking is standard for July and August Saturdays. Some of the most in-demand properties fill peak weekends earlier than that.

Direct flights: Maximum availability across all routes. This is the easiest period for guests to reach any Greek island destination.

Planning implication: The period from August 1-15 is off-limits for legal Orthodox wedding ceremonies due to religious observance. This doesn’t affect symbolic ceremonies, but if you’re pursuing a legally binding Greek ceremony, avoid this window. It also creates concentrated booking demand in the surrounding weeks.

One practical note on summer weather: the Cyclades, Santorini and Mykonos in particular, experience strong Meltemi winds through July and August. These cool the temperature and reduce humidity, which is welcome in 30C heat, but they create real challenges for outdoor ceremonies and wedding photography, particularly anything involving hair, veils, or lightweight decor. If you’re marrying in the Cyclades in peak summer, ask your venue specifically how they manage wind exposure during ceremonies.

Autumn weddings in Greece (September and October)

Autumn is underrated as a wedding season, and October in particular is worth serious consideration. The summer heat eases, the sea stays warm from months of sunshine, and the light shifts to a warm, low-angle quality that photographers actively look for.

September

September is still very much peak season in pricing terms, even though many couples assume autumn automatically means lower costs. The first three weeks of September sit firmly at summer rates for most venues and vendors.

Cost vs peak season: Early September pricing is typically at or very close to peak. By late September, some venues start to show flexibility, particularly for non-Saturday dates. The full price drop doesn’t arrive until October.

Venue availability and lead time: September Saturdays at popular venues still require 12-15 months advance booking. The assumption that September is easier to book than July is often wrong.

Direct flights: Charter flights are still running in September, but frequency starts to reduce at smaller island airports in the final weeks of the month. For guests flying from further afield, confirm direct route availability before finalising a late September date.

Planning implication: September sits in an awkward position. You’re paying close to peak prices, but the operational ease of full peak season is beginning to wind down. If you’re choosing September specifically for lower costs, check the actual pricing with venues first before assuming it applies.

October

October is the best-kept secret in Greek wedding planning. Temperatures are still genuinely warm (averaging 20-24C), the sea holds its summer temperature well into the month, and venue prices are back near spring levels. The islands are noticeably quieter, which means more attentive service, greater flexibility from vendors, and a calmer atmosphere overall.

Cost vs peak season: October venue pricing is typically 20-30% below peak, comparable to May. Minimum spend requirements are often negotiable, and venues are more willing to work on what’s included.

Venue availability and lead time: Despite being a value month, October books out faster than most couples expect. It has a loyal following among photographers and couples who’ve done their research. Book 10-14 months in advance for popular venues.

Direct flights: Direct charter flights to most Greek island airports run through October. Some routes to smaller airports reduce frequency toward the end of the month, so check the specific schedule for your island and the cities your guests are travelling from.

Planning implication: October couples often find venues more flexible on package contents and add-ons than in peak season. If a venue felt out of budget when you priced it for July, the October rate may change that. Winter weddings in Greece (November to March)

Winter wedding season in Greece

Winter weddings in Greece suit a specific kind of couple and a specific kind of vision. Coastal and island areas stay milder than most of northern Europe, with island temperatures averaging 15-17C. Historical sites and venues that are overrun in peak season are genuinely peaceful, and mainland landscapes are greener in winter than in summer.

The practical constraints are real. Outdoor ceremonies are not reliable from November through to early April. Many island venues close entirely for the winter season. Direct flights to smaller island airports reduce sharply, which creates genuine logistics challenges for international guests.

Where winter works well: mainland venues, intimate celebrations with a small guest list, and couples who prioritise historical backdrops and complete privacy over the classic Greek island setting. Costs are lowest across all categories, but reduced venue availability means less choice, not necessarily better deals on the specific properties you want.

Other planning factors that affect your date choice

Weather and cost are only part of the timing decision. These are the factors that catch couples out most often.

National and public holidays

A public holiday in your home country can become a genuine planning advantage. When we married in May in the Netherlands, three Dutch public holidays fell that month, and our guests used them as bridge days to extend the trip. Our attendance rate was higher as a result. Check whether your wedding month aligns with long weekends or public holidays in the countries your main guests are travelling from. Also check Greek national holidays, which can affect vendor staffing and local transport on and around your date.

School holidays

If you have guests with school-age children, check term dates in their home countries before finalising a date. A wedding that falls in term time puts families in a difficult position, and some simply won’t be able to attend. School holiday periods also mean higher flight costs across the board, so this trade-off is worth thinking through deliberately.

Wedding photo timing

Greece’s midday sun in summer is harsh. Shadows are strong, light is flat, and nobody looks their best squinting into direct overhead sun. Late afternoon and early evening light is significantly better for photography, and the hour before sunset is worth building your ceremony time around. A late ceremony (around 6pm) is completely normal in Greece and means your reception runs into the evening. Check local sunrise and sunset times for your specific date before finalising your ceremony start time.

If you’re pursuing a legally binding ceremony in Greece rather than a symbolic one, allow 3-4 months to gather and process the required documents. This includes apostille stamps, official translations, and a Certificate of No Impediment from your home country. The paperwork timeline doesn’t change with the season, but it affects when you need to start. For a May wedding, begin the legal process no later than January of the same year. The complete legal guide for getting married in Greece covers country-specific requirements in full.

Making your choice

Summer wedding season beach wedding in Greece.

The best time of year for a wedding in Greece depends on what you’re actually optimising for. If cost is the priority, May and October give you the best value. If maximum guest convenience matters most, July and August offer the easiest international travel connections. If atmosphere and a relaxed experience are what you’re after, late spring and early autumn both deliver.

What I’d say to every couple reading this: the timing decision is a budget decision as much as it is a weather decision. Choosing May over August for an equivalent venue can mean a difference of 3,000-4,800 EUR before you’ve touched catering, photography, or flowers. That’s worth taking seriously.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to get married in Greece?

May and October are the best months for most couples. Both offer comfortable temperatures, venue prices 20–30% below peak season, and good direct flight availability.

May gives you spring light and colourful landscapes; October gives you warm sea temperatures and a quieter atmosphere. If school holidays push you toward summer, June is the last month with any negotiating flexibility before peak pricing fully takes hold.

How much cheaper is a shoulder season wedding in Greece?

Shoulder season venues (April, May, October) typically run 20–30% below peak pricing. A mid-range Crete venue priced at €7,000 in July sits at roughly €5,000–€5,500 in May or October.

The saving compounds when you factor in guest flights and accommodation, which also drop significantly outside peak season. Across a full wedding budget, the May-vs-July difference can run to €3,000–€4,800 before catering or photography are factored in.

Are there months to avoid for a wedding in Greece?

Outdoor weddings are not reliable from November through March, and many island venues close entirely during winter. August 1–15 is off-limits for legal Orthodox ceremonies due to religious observance.

Early April can be logistically complicated for island weddings due to limited direct flight availability from some origins. None of these are absolute rules, but they’re constraints worth knowing before committing to a date.

How far in advance do I need to book a Greek wedding venue?

For peak season (July and August), 12–18 months in advance is standard for popular venues. For shoulder season (May and October), 10–14 months is typical, though October books out faster than most couples expect.

For early spring (April) and late September, there’s generally more flexibility, but availability varies by venue and location.

Does the wedding season affect my guests’ travel costs?

Yes, significantly. Peak season flights (July and August) can cost three to four times more than the same routes in April or October. For a group flying from the UK or US, the collective saving from shoulder season versus peak can run to tens of thousands of euros across the whole group.

Some guests who genuinely want to attend a peak-season Santorini wedding simply can’t afford to. Factor this into the decision alongside your own venue budget.
