With thoughtful planning, you can ensure your guests enjoy an immersive, heartfelt, and truly memorable celebration in Greece.
Plan a Greek destination wedding rich in captivating guest experiences.
Discover creative ways to delight guests with authentic Greek wedding traditions and meaningful moments they will treasure forever.
For most guests, the chance to visit Greece for your destination wedding will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Greece is a country blessed with idyllic weather and breathtaking scenery. It offers a generous helping of warm culture and heritage. This ticks most boxes for a dream trip abroad.
But personalised touches throughout your Greek wedding celebrations will leave lasting memories to treasure long after the festivities. So, what considered aspects can you include to create memorable guest experiences at your Greek wedding?
Let the celebrations and lasting impressions begin!
Take the opportunity to spend quality time with guests who arrive a few days before your wedding ceremony.
Organised Greek cultural activities.

There are countless opportunities to immerse your guests in authentic Greek cultural experiences—the perfect introduction to this remarkable country.
- Tour a local winery and sample delicious Greek wines and the finest Greek cuisine. Or, take a guided tour of a lush Olive grove. The tour ends with an extra virgin olive oil tasting lesson. Alternatively, enjoy a unique food pairing session.
- Local estates and farms offer tours and cooking classes. Experience centuries-old traditional farming methods and be inspired by lessons on cooking unique local Greek dishes.
- Arrange a dance class. Have fun learning a traditional Greek dance. Be ready to show your moves on the dance floor at the wedding reception!
The chance to catch up and make new friends.
A pre-wedding get-together with your guests is the perfect opportunity. You can catch up with guests you have not seen for a while. It’s also a fantastic chance for your guests to mingle and get to know each other before the wedding.
We held a leisurely waterside brunch before our Cretan wedding, with a backdrop of stunning Greek coastline and Mediterranean sunshine.
To create a livelier mood, we organised an evening drinks reception the night before the wedding. This helped to really kick off the celebrations. Our guests got to slip into holiday mode. They met new friends. These new friends then ended up partying together at the wedding.
Authentic charm of a traditional Greek Orthodox wedding ceremony.

Remember to appreciate how enchanting your friends and family, particularly non-Greeks, will find authentic Greek Orthodox wedding traditions.
Greek Orthodox wedding customs will be a completely new experience for many of your guests:
- the deeply spiritual essence of the ceremony
- the Dance of Isaiah (a ceremonial walk around the alter led by the priest)
- the crowning ceremony using ornate Stefana (crowns)
- The roles of a Koumabaro/Koumbara are the Greek version of Best Man and Maid of Honour. These roles will all be fascinating to your guests.
It’s worth mentioning here that not all memorable moments are planned or memorable for the right reasons…
While we were doing the Dance of Isaiah, our Chanter started to sing. Her singing was so unexpectedly terrible that we couldn’t control our laughter. And neither could our guests, who had great fun recalling it later that day! A magical moment that turned into a moment we’ll never forget!
Other memorable moments to include at the church.

- Live-stream your ceremony so guests who can’t attend can still share in a part of your special day.
- Give Bonbonierres (Koufeta) as guests leave the church. (Packages of sugared almonds, always in odd numbers that cannot be divided by two. Symbolic of how the new couple also cannot be divided).
- Provide flower petals as an alternative to confetti for a pretty addition to wedding photos.
How do you create a memorable Greek wedding reception?
A Greek wedding reception is the perfect opportunity to fully immerse your guests in Greece’s unparalleled warm and welcoming culture.
Idyllic wedding reception venue/location.

Choose a venue steeped in tradition and ancient history to create an authentic Greek wedding backdrop. Think medieval chapels, rural estates, wineries, vineyards, and olive groves—for a timeless and intimate Greek wedding experience.
We have magical memories of our venue, the rustic Metohi Estate in Chania, Crete. A Greek historical site that now serves as an avocado and orange farm. The lush landscaped gardens were the perfect intimate, romantic setting, giving our guests a memorable, authentic Greek experience.
Those who prefer the sand between their toes should look at beachside locations. Many are perfectly positioned to catch the breathtaking pink-hued Greek sunset, a picture-perfect moment to be treasured.
Decorations and lighting set the tone.

With such stunning backdrops, a few simple touches will enhance rather than spoil the view.
Flowers are a beautiful way to soften and refine a space. For an authentic Greek wedding vibe, choose native seasonal blooms, lemon and orange tree foliage, and elegant olive branches.
Lighting is crucial for creating the right atmosphere. Guests will remember the romantic ambience of an enchanting Greek wedding reception experience. We opted for fairy lights strategically placed around lush orange and lemon trees. Festoon lights were draped to create the perfect romantic atmosphere.
Make a memorable entrance with a personalised touch!

Pomegranates are hugely symbolic in Greek culture. In an ancient Greek wedding custom, the bride and groom stomp together on a pomegranate. This act occurs as they enter the wedding reception. It is said to represent good fortune and prosperity for the newly married couple as the seeds scatter.
We honoured this tradition when we arrived. We played the Queen song ‘Radio GaGa’. It was a unique twist that made it our own!
A magnificent Greek wedding feast.

Indulging your guests in a deliciously authentic Greek wedding feast will leave a lasting impression.
A Meze is an array of Greek dishes designed to share. It is a fantastic way to showcase the abundance of seasonal produce available in Greece. It’s an immersive Greek dining experience that allows guests to try new foods and sample a ‘bit of everything’.
As we married in Crete, we included Antikristo, a traditional Cretan way of grilling meat over a wood fire. It is a unique and memorable Greek wedding dining experience that adds a remarkable sense of theatre.
And don’t forget dessert…
For an indulgent finale, encourage your guests to sample a selection of unique, traditional Greek sweets and desserts.
Sticky and sweet filo pastry treats, Baklava, and warm honey doughnuts called Loukoumades are popular and noteworthy Greek wedding desserts.
Getting the party started.. at the bar.
Think a little differently for a memorable twist on your wedding bar.
For an exclusive feel, hire a unique mobile bar.

We hired a vintage van converted into a stylish bar. It served a small selection of drinks as guests arrived. The options included Aperol Spritz and Kir Royale cocktails, wine, and beers. For a special touch, we created an outdoor bar area with high tables. Guests could enjoy their drinks and nibble on snacks. They did this while waiting for us to arrive.
A cocktail bar.
Put together a carefully curated selection of wedding cocktails and give them unique names that are personal to you. Bartenders mixing vibrant cocktails add an unforgettable sense of fun and festivity!
Create your own cocktail with a twist as we did that can be easily served as a non-alcoholic version. For a Greek twist on a regular Mojito, we replaced rum with Greek Mastiha. We served vodka with apple juice as a nod to my husband’s Polish heritage.
Remember the shots.
Ouzo, Raki, and Mastiha are authentic Greek spirits perfect for wedding toasts. They are strong, so choose wisely if your guests want to last the distance!
For reference, Mastiha averages 30% ABV compared to 40-50% for Ouzo and Raki.
We (sensibly) opted for Mastiha, which our guests absolutely loved. They indulged in a memorable taste of an Indigenous Greek alcoholic drink. They were also able to enjoy a lot more shots!
Immersive wedding guest experiences.
Festive Greek Music.

Hire a traditional Bouzouki Band for a high-energy and unique sound of authentic live Greek wedding music.
For a soft, more elegant sound, choose a harpist or violinist. They will create a memorable and intimate ambiance. This suits the romantic occasion.
And dancing….

The iconic Zorbas Dance (Sirtaki) will have everyone on their feet. This is an immersive guest experience that is guaranteed to leave lasting memories.
Even if you’re unfamiliar with the name, I guarantee you will recognise the music as soon as you hear it! The dance starts with everyone in a circle or line, holding shoulders. Starting slow, the music builds to a lively climax, creating a fun-fuelled atmosphere as everyone tries to keep up!
Just imagine the joyful chaos of coordinating an ouzo-induced Sirtaki with your loved ones – an undeniably memorable experience.
Or, you could hire professional dancers to show you how it should be done!
For those of you wondering….
Why haven’t I mentioned Greek plate smashing – it always happens at Greek weddings in the movies?!
I hate to tell you, but Greeks no longer smash plates at weddings! It’s an outdated tradition. It has been replaced with a softer approach. People now throw napkins or carnations at dancers in the centre of the dance floor. This is a much safer option!

Personalised gestures for your wedding guests.
Personalised gestures will leave your guests feeling special and included.
Individual wedding favours.

A small personalised gift at each place setting is a lovely, heartfelt keepsake for guests.
Choose items inspired by Greek culture. Opt for a small bottle of Greek olive oil, honey, or Ouzo. Greek sweets, chocolates, or olives also make great choices. Inscribe each item with individual guest names.
Additionally, Bonbonierres (Koufeta) can also be given at the reception instead of the church.
Incorporating the Greek Evil Eye symbol into your wedding favours can be a meaningful gesture.
The symbol is believed to protect against bad luck and attract good fortune. Also, it is given as charms or jewelry incorporating the symbol.
A picture speaks a thousand words…
We shared a speech and personalised slide show of carefully selected photos, expressing our love and appreciation for each guest. It was an extraordinarily heartfelt moment highlighting each guest’s positive impact and participation in our lives.
A memorable finale to your Greek wedding.

Fireworks make an extravagant finale to your special day. Clear night skies in Greece are mesmerizing. They provide the perfect setting for a spectacular visual as your celebrations come to an end.
Always make sure your wedding venue is agreeable and able to host fireworks beforehand.
Alternatively, for a more affordable ambiance, offer each guest a sparkler. They can wave them as the bride and groom leave the wedding reception.
A magical Greek wedding day bursting with memories.
I hope these suggestions inspire you while planning your own unforgettable Greek destination wedding experience.
Looking back at photos of our wedding in Crete brings back such blissful memories of our special day. It started with the enchanting location. We enjoyed exquisite Greek food and celebratory wedding drinks. There were cherished moments of fun and laughter with our loved ones.
Most importantly, wedding photos can capture beautiful moments in time. You create truly memorable wedding experiences. These memories will stay in the hearts and minds of you and your guests forever.
