Wedding Flowers in Greece: What’s in Season and What They Cost

Last updated: 27 October 2026.

How I know this: I planned our own Greek Orthodox wedding in Chania, Crete, in May 2024, from abroad, for 96 guests from six continents. Now I help couples plan theirs through Big Fat Greek Day, which is on track for around 45,000 visits a year.

Greek wedding flowers work best when you follow the season: spring brings wildflowers, summer brings bougainvillea and oleander, and much florist stock is imported. At 2026 prices, flowers and decor together usually run €700 to €3,000 for about 100 guests.

Flowers are where so many couples quietly panic. And in Greece there’s one simple way to make them both beautiful and sensible: work with the season, not against it.

Spring is the big flower season in Greece. Hillside wildflowers are at their best in April and May, bougainvillea and oleander take over from late spring through summer, and by September and October bougainvillea is most of what’s still out. When we married in Crete in May, the highways were lined with bright fuchsia and white flowers, and bougainvillea was in full bloom across the villages.

MonthWhat’s flowering around you
March and AprilHillside wildflowers coming in, poppies from March
MayWildflowers at their best, poppies, olive trees in flower, jasmine starting, bougainvillea coming out
JuneThe last of the poppies, jasmine, bougainvillea and oleander
July and AugustBougainvillea and oleander. The spring wildflowers are over
SeptemberBougainvillea still out, olive branches green as always
OctoberBougainvillea often still flowering, olive greenery

This is your backdrop, not your florist’s stock. It’s what you’ll see on the drive to the venue, behind your portraits and climbing the walls of a village square, and it shows up in every photo without costing you anything. One small warning on May: olive flowers are tiny and cream-colored, so they won’t read as flowers in your photos.

If you’re marrying in April or May, plan a little time for photos out in it, especially if your board is full of loose, wild arrangements with poppies. In September or October there’s less local color, so lean on greenery and on what your florist brings in. For how the months compare beyond flowers, I’ve covered weather, prices and crowds in the best time to get married in Greece.

What are the pink flowers all over Greece, and when do they bloom?

The bright pink and magenta flowers climbing walls and terraces all over Greece are bougainvillea. It flowers from late spring through summer and often keeps going into October.

That makes it the most reliable free backdrop for a summer or early autumn wedding. If you’ve saved bougainvillea wedding photos on your board, this is the look Greece hands you without a florist. Ask your venue whether there’s a wall, a doorway or a terrace covered in it, and plan your portraits there.

Why are so many florist flowers in Greece imported?

A lot of the flowers a florist uses in Greece aren’t grown here, and most of the imported ones come from the Netherlands. In 2025 Greece imported about US$35 million of cut flowers from the Netherlands, close to nine in ten of all the cut flowers it imported.

That matters for two reasons. Flowers that travel cost more to get to you. And a flower that’s out of season locally is more likely to be one of them.

I learned this from the other side. When I was planning our wedding from Amsterdam, I thought I’d save money by importing flowers myself. The Netherlands is the country of tulips, so I considered myself lucky. Then I ran the numbers. Once you add keeping them cold in Greek heat, getting them to the venue, and the 10 to 15 hours of making the arrangements, I’d have spent a lot more than hiring a local florist. Local florists get wholesale prices you can’t, and they have refrigerated vans. I wrote up the rest in what to DIY for your wedding and what to skip.

So the most useful question you can ask is simple: “What’s in season locally in my month?” Then build from that answer. Choosing in-season flowers is often the easiest way to keep the look and lower the bill.

How much do wedding flowers cost in Greece?

At 2026 prices, flowers and decor together usually come to €700 to €3,000 for a wedding of about 100 guests. Here’s how that breaks down by piece.

Item (2026 prices)Rough range
Bridal bouquetabout €100 to €150
Guest table centerpiece€30 to €100 each
Ceremony archabout €800 standard, up to €2,000 premium
All flowers and decor together€700 to €3,000

These are the ranges I work from. The first three rows are per piece, for the flowers and the florist’s work on them. The last row is everything floral and decorative together for a standard wedding of about 100 guests, from the same 2026 cost research behind what a wedding in Greece really costs. None of it includes lighting, furniture or large installations. Your island, your guest count and the flowers you pick will move every number.

The bottom row is a typical spend, not a ceiling. An Athens wedding planner published two of their own client weddings at 2025 prices, and the flowers alone came to €2,500 for 70 guests on Paros and €3,400 for 90 guests in Athens.

Centerpieces are where it adds up fastest. At €30 to €100 each, ten tables is anywhere from €300 to €1,000 on centerpieces alone, so that’s a good place to decide what you really want.

One more thing before you compare two quotes: not every quote includes VAT, and the flowers and the styling work can sit at different rates. Ask which rate applies and whether it’s already in the price.

Which Pinterest flower looks work for a Greek wedding?

The looks that work best here are the ones Greece already grows: loose, garden-style arrangements in spring, one plentiful local flower used in volume, and lots of olive green. Your board is still the right place to start. Here’s how some of the flower looks couples love translate:

  • One flower, a lot of it. Ask your florist which single flower is local and plentiful in your month, then use plenty of that one.
  • Wild and a little whimsical. Looser, garden-style arrangements sit naturally against a spring hillside of poppies and wildflowers.
  • Deeper colors. Plum and olive weddings were up 1,380% and merlot up 370% in Pinterest’s 2026 wedding report. Ask what’s available in those shades in your month, rather than insisting on one exact variety.
  • Flower bars and installations. In the same report, flower bar set-ups rose 870% and flower installations were up too. In summer heat, ask how long the flowers will hold up out in the open. And price an installation before you fall for it: my Santorini wedding cost article puts elaborate installations at €5,000 to €8,000 and up.

The wider list of 2027 looks is in the 2027 article.

If you’re having an Orthodox ceremony, the crowns are their own tradition, and couples often have them made with flowers or olive branches. I’ve covered them fully in my article on stefana crowns.

What should you ask your florist in Greece?

A bride on white wooden steps holds a bouquet of olive branches, pampas grass and white roses.

Start with what’s in season locally in your month, then ask about heat, wind, VAT and real weddings they’ve done. These are the questions I’d take to every florist:

  • What’s in season locally in my month, and what would you need to bring in?
  • Which flowers on my board hold up in heat, and which won’t?
  • How is the arch or installation built, and has it been used outdoors in wind?
  • Is VAT included, and which rate applies to the flowers and to the styling?
  • Can I see photos from real weddings you’ve done, not just styled shoots?
  • If one flower isn’t available that week, what would you swap in?

Where should you spend your flower budget, and where can you save?

Spend on the few flowers people see up close: your bouquet, the ceremony spot, maybe the tables. Then let Greece do the rest. In spring, the hillsides are covered. In summer, the bougainvillea and oleander are out.

Our own wedding budget went over. It wasn’t the flowers. We spent €37,933 all-in for our 96 guests, and the wedding itself came to €26,400. The rest was two choices we made on purpose: upgrading the lighting, and covering rooms for some of our close friends and family.

Other couples tell me flowers were the part that caught them out. When Garanfil and Roman married at a winery near Athens, Garanfil said the biggest surprise was the flowers: “Friends who had planned destination weddings warned us about floral costs, but we didn’t quite believe them until we saw the quotes ourselves.” Her advice was that with a beautiful venue, “you don’t need to fill every corner with arrangements.” You can read Garanfil and Roman’s wedding story in full.

So when the first floral quote comes in, walk through the venue photos and mark the corners that already look finished without arrangements. Then ask your florist to build the budget around the three or four places your guests will see flowers up close.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wedding Flowers in Greece

Can you use olive branches instead of flowers at a Greek wedding?

Yes, for a lot of it. Olive branches are green in every month, so they’re the one thing a florist can count on in September and October as much as in May. In a venue set among olive trees, much of the green is already around you, and olive branches also make simple, traditional stefana crowns.

Should you do your own wedding flowers in Greece to save money?

No, I wouldn’t. I priced importing flowers from the Netherlands myself and it would have cost me more than a local florist, before counting the 10 to 15 hours of arranging and the risk of everything wilting in the heat.

What do wedding flowers cost on Santorini?

A bridal bouquet on Santorini runs about €100 to €150 at 2026 prices. My Santorini cost article puts a basic flower package of bouquet, ceremony arch and centerpieces at €1,500 to €2,000, with elaborate installations from €5,000.
